**Dance Theatre Rimpparemmi** is the northernmost professional dance theatre in Finland. We create physical, musical, and strongly theatrical contemporary dance and dance theatre.

Our performances combine precise artistic work, northern identity, and a touch of quirky humor. Our stories can be tender or rough around the edges, but most often they are truly funny.

Our home is in Rovaniemi at Cultural House Wiljami, and we actively tour across Finland.

A Fistful of Funk is a performance combining street dance, absurd theatre, and live music. Through play, humour, and virtuosic street dance, it explores themes of friendship, gender roles, and masculinity.

Three lonely cowboys set off on an epic journey across the desert. Along the way, 1970s funk dance meets text by playwright Juho Keränen, inspired by the toxic machismo and hypermasculinity of Sergio Leone's Western films.

Locking emerged in the 1970s on the US West Coast within African American communities, characterised by sharp freezes, groovy steps, and acrobatic tricks. The production focuses on one of Locking's key elements: character — the dancer's individual quality and presence. Through characters and play, the show explores alternative expressions of masculinity while showcasing each performer's unique style and personality.

Founded in 2008, Will Funk For Food is one of Finland's most internationally successful street dance groups, specialising in Locking. Their achievements include three consecutive Finnish Championship gold medals and performances in Japan, France, and Sweden.

Teoksessa kolme yksinäistä cowboyta lähtee yhdessä eeppiselle matkalle halki aavikon. Matkalla 1970-luvun funk-tanssi yhdistyy näytelmäkirjailija Juho Keräsen tekstiin, jonka inspiraationa on Sergio Leonen lännenelokuvien toksinen machismo ja hypermaskuliinisuus.

Locking on 1970-luvulla Yhdysvaltain länsirannikolla afrikkalaisamerikkalaisten keskuudessa syntynyt tanssityyli, jolle ovat ominaisia terävät pysähdykset, groovaavat askeleet ja akrobaattiset temput. Esityksessä syvennytään yhteen Lockingin keskeisistä elementeistä: characteriin eli tanssijan ominaislaatuun. Hahmojen ja leikin kautta esitys tutkii vaihtoehtoisia maskuliinisia ilmaisuja ja esittelee samalla kunkin esiintyjän ainutlaatuista tyyliä ja persoonaa.

Will Funk For Food on vuonna 2008 perustettu, yksi Suomen kansainvälisesti menestyneimmistä katutanssiryhmistä, joka on erikoistunut Locking-tanssityyliin. WFFF tekee tanssilajiaan tunnetuksi Suomessa, ja pyrkii toiminnallaan vakiinnuttamaan katutanssia osaksi suomalaista kulttuuritarjontaa sekä tuomaan iloa ja riemua kaikenikäisille. Tanssiryhmän suurimpia meriittejä ovat kolminkertainen peräkkäinen SM-kulta, sekä esityksiä niin Japanissa, Ranskassa kuin Itämeren takana Ruotsissa.

In March, Remmi Live Club celebrates dance cinema as Kati Kallio brings the Moving North dance film tour to Rovaniemi. The Moving North tour presents award-winning Finnish and Nordic dance films alongside works by Lapland-based artists, centering diverse movement as a key storytelling element in film. Following the screening, the audience is as always welcome to join a discussion with the panellists.

Dance cinema is a rich and multifaceted union of two powerful art forms. It is an art form that transcends language barriers and genre boundaries — democratic, accessible, and endlessly fascinating.


Remmi klubilla pöhistään maaliskuussa tanssielokuvasta kun Kati Kallio tuo Moving North -tanssielokuvakiertueen Rovaniemelle. Moving North -kiertue esittää palkittuja kotimaisia ja pohjoismaisia tanssielokuvia yhdessä lappilaistaiteilijoiden teosten kanssa, nostaen moninaisen liikkeen keskeiseen osaan elokuvan kerronnassa. Näytöksen jälkeen on yleisö tuttuun tapaan tervetullut osallistumaan keskusteluun panelistien kanssa.

Tanssielokuva on kahden vahvan taidelajin täydellinen ja monimuotoinen liitto. Se on taidemuoto, joka ylittää kielimuurit ja genrerajat – se on demokraattinen, saavutettava ja aina yhtä kiehtova.

A treat in store! Young artists will be bringing their own works to the stage at the Wiljami Cultural Center. The performances will feature solo and group pieces, all created by the students themselves. There are many pieces, and two different performances will be held over two days. So be sure to reserve your spot for both so you don’t miss a thing!

A maximum theatrical experience with minimal means. The characters in this interactive piece, Hyppy and Naru, are experts in bouncing. They never get bored when their toys are jump ropes. With them, they take the audience to the world’s highest mountain, Mount Everest, organize a zany sports competition, and even put on their very own circus show.

Welcome aboard this rhythmic jumping adventure, but watch out—you might find yourself tied up before you know it!

Choreographer Jaakko Toivonen often draws inspiration for his dance works from his own childhood. A childhood where self-invented adventures were the most beloved games. A sandbox could turn into a hotel, a wardrobe into a portal to another dimension, and bike racks into a stable. Through play, one can test the limits of the imagination. And the dance piece Hyppynarutus does just that!

Minimaalisilla keinoilla maksimaalinen teatterikokemus. Vuorovaikutteisen teoksen hahmot, Hyppy ja Naru ovat pomppimisen erikoisasiantuntijoita. Heillä ei käy aika pitkäksi, kun leluina ovat hyppynarut. Niiden avulla he vievät katsojat maailman korkeimmalle vuorelle Mount Everestille, laittavat pystyyn hullunkuriset urheilukisat ja toteuttavat jopa ikioman sirkusesityksen.

*You figured it out, you love,* is a musical performance lasting about 40 minutes that takes the audience on a journey through the different shades of love—for another person, for longing, and for life itself.

Three performers take the stage: a musician and two stage performers. The performance is built around beloved Finnish songs, punctuated by poetic texts and subtle moments of dance. Dancer Laura Kallas’s movement brings sensitivity and a physical presence to the work.

The musical world of the piece is familiar and accessible to the audience—featuring beloved songs by Badding, Hector, Juha Tapio, and Eppu Normaali, among others. The production particularly appeals to a senior audience but touches people of all ages.

*Olet perillä, sinä rakastat* on noin 40 minuutin mittainen musiikillinen esitys, joka kuljettaa katsojan rakkauden eri sävyihin, toiseen ihmiseen, kaipuuseen ja itse elämään.

Lavalla nähdään kolme esiintyjää: muusikko ja kaksi näyttämöllistä tulkitsijaa. Esitys rakentuu rakastettujen suomalaisten laulujen ympärille, joita rytmittävät runolliset tekstit ja hienovaraiset tanssilliset hetket. Tanssitaiteilija Laura Kallaksen liike tuo teokseen herkkyyttä ja kehollista läsnäoloa.

### **– a musical adventure to the roots of Finnish song**

*The Song Hunters* is a fast-paced and humorous musical theater production that delves into the roots of the Finnish song tradition.

The story begins when Asiasta-Tietämätön meets two somewhat eccentric guides—Laulunhistoriat. These good-natured and slightly bumbling characters lead him on a journey through the ages: from archival recordings to sleigh songs and from runo singing to the present day.

Along the way, it becomes clear how the songs of the past still live on in today’s music—in schlager, rock, pop, and rap. The performance combines live music, storytelling, and playful theatricality in a way that captivates young audiences.

On stage, you’ll also meet colorful characters ranging from market vendors to Elias Lönnrot, and knowledge accumulates almost unnoticed, in a fun and collaborative way.

Matkan varrella selviää, miten menneiden aikojen laulut elävät yhä tämän päivän musiikissa – iskelmässä, rockissa, popissa ja räpissä. Esitys yhdistelee elävää musiikkia, tarinankerrontaa ja leikillistä näyttämöllisyyttä tavalla, joka tempaa mukaansa nuoren yleisön.

In this monologue performance, he recounts his memories of his grandfather and their encounters. As a little boy, he didn’t always understand why his grandfathers were quiet, even fearful. Why did they keep a set of knives on the porch railing? How do those memories appear to him now as an adult? The experiences of different generations are explored in this sensitive text, offering understanding and hope.

Monologi-esityksessä hän käy läpi muistojaan ukista, heidän kohtaamisista. Pieni poika ei aina ymmärtänyt, miksi ukki oli hiljainen, jopa pelokas. Miksi ukilla oli veitsisarja kuistin kaiteella? This musical performance, aimed at adults and seniors, takes you on a journey into the world of Finnish film music—into that atmosphere created when melodies linger in your ears and scenes from decades past come vividly to mind. On stage, a sense of familiarity and the warmth of nostalgia come to life as we hear gems of film music from different decades.

The program features a diverse selection of moods, including: Akseli and Elina’s Wedding Waltz, Seven Times Seven, and Condemned to Wander. Each song carries a piece of Finnish film history—moments that will never be forgotten.

Amidst the music, we’ll take brief trips back in time to the world of the films themselves—recalling the stories and moods that gave birth to these songs in their day. So, get ready for a musical cinematic moment where you can enjoy, reminisce, and maybe even hum along a little.

Tässä aikuisille ja senioreille suunnatussa musiikkiesityksessä sukelletaan suomalaisen elokuvamusiikin maailmaan – siihen tunnelmaan, joka syntyy, kun sävelet jäävät soimaan korvamatona ja kohtaukset piirtyvät muistiin vuosikymmenten takaa. ## Harri Kuusijärvi Trio: Aallot

In his latest project, Aallot, accordionist [Harri Kuusijärvi](https://www.harrikuusijarvi.com/) combines the acoustic warmth of a jazz rhythm section—featuring bassist Jori Huhtala and drummer Mika Kallio—with his new electronically enhanced accordion. The trio blends Nordic serenity with effervescent jazz energy. The result is music that is earthy, minimalist, and irresistibly groovy—and probably something you’ve hardly ever heard before.

Harri Kuusijärvi is one of the most distinctive figures in contemporary accordion music. He has premiered numerous contemporary works composed for the accordion, performed in the realm of rhythm music with countless artists from both the front and back lines, and garnered rave reviews across genre boundaries for his albums. The Finnish Accordion Association named Kuusijärvi Accordion Artist of the Year 2023, stating in its rationale that “with his open-minded projects, Kuusijärvi has expanded the understanding of just how versatile the accordion can be as an instrument.” Kuusijärvi was also nominated for Classical Artist of the Year at the Emma Gala in 2021 and for the Teosto Award in 2020.

The ensemble’s first studio session was broadcast on the YLE Jazzklubi program in June 2024. Their debut album, Aallot, will be released in January 2025 via Flame Jazz Records.

Uusimmassa projektissaan Aallot harmonikkataiteilija [Harri Kuusijärvi](https://www.harrikuusijarvi.com/) yhdistää uuden elektronisesti laajennetun harmonikkansa basisti Jori Huhtalan ja rumpali Mika Kallion muodostaman jazz-rytmisektion akustiseen lämpöön. Trio yhdistää pohjoismaisen seesteisyyden kuplivaan jazz-energiaan. Tuloksena on musiikkia, joka on maanläheistä, minimalistista ja vastustamattoman groovaavaa – ja luultavasti jotain sellaista, mitä tuskin olet ennen kuullut.

Harri Kuusijärvi on uuden harmonikkamusiikin omaleimaisimpia tekijöitä. Hän on kantaesittänyt lukuisia harmonikalle sävellettyjä nykymusiikkiteoksia, esiintynyt rytmimusiikin saralla lukemattomien etu- ja takarivin artistien kanssa ja kerännyt albumeillaan kiittäviä arvioita yli genrerajojen. Suomen Harmonikkaliitto valitsi Kuusijärven Vuoden harmonikkataiteilijaksi 2023 todeten perusteluissa, että ”Kuusijärvi on ennakkoluulottomilla projekteillaan laajentanut käsitystä siitä, mihin kaikkeen harmonikka voi soittimena taipua”. Kuusijärvi on noteerattu myös Vuoden klassinen -ehdokkuudella Emma Gaalassa vuonna 2021, ja Teosto-palkintoehdokkuudella vuonna 2020.

Yhtyeen ensimmäinen studiosessio radioitiin YLE Jazzklubi -ohjelmassa kesäkuussa 2024. Debyyttialbumi Aallot julkaistaan tammikuussa 2025 Flame Jazz Records -yhtiön kautta.

We are guided by rules we did not invent ourselves. Whose voice echoes warnings, old truths, and inherited fears in our heads? Lurking in the shadows of the mind are those who know better. Those who whisper warnings before we even have a chance to cross the line. But who drew that line?

This performance delves into the prohibitions that have been imposed on us—and those we have adopted as our own. What happens when the body does what it shouldn’t? When movement becomes inappropriate, strange, playful. When the mind moves. When memories stir.

In the mind’s storehouse lies the schoolyard. Grandpa’s rubber boots. An unresolved quarrel. A sauna loaf. A whimper of longing. The threat of violence. A rope noose. Forbidden gestures, words, thoughts—everything that has been erased, and the Macarena.

You must not do it. You must not see it. You must not remember it. But if you forget, someone will surely remind you.

Male Live offers snapshots of the world of men. It consists of images and impressions of what it means to be—and not to be—a man. What is a man? What are the many roles of a man? A man is one of the legal genders. What else?

This work delves deeply into the complexity of masculinity and how the role of a man is experienced and perceived in our society. It highlights how a man’s role does not arise out of thin air. It is not merely biology or “natural,” but is built upon expectations, relationships, and life experiences.

This work explores how masculinity can be sensitive or even painful, yet at the same time full of bursts of joy and exuberance. Uros Live is a thought-provoking look at the essence of being a man and how norms shape our understanding of masculinity.

Uros Live on tuokiokuvia uroiden maailmasta. Se on kuvia ja tunnelmia miehenä olemisesta ja olemattomuudesta. Mikä on mies? Mitkä ovat miehen monet roolit? Mies on yksi juridisista sukupuolista. Mitä muuta?

## Remmi Liveklubi – M

Behind the stage name M is [Minja Koski](https://m-official.fi/), a singer-songwriter and actress born in Kuhmola. Her five released albums have earned her nominations for the Emma and Teosto Awards, as well as gigs at the most important domestic festivals. In addition to her own songs, M delighted fans by recording the album \*Songs from the 1960s\* in 2022, which features beloved pop classics.

Koski was also one of composer Kaj Chydenius’s trusted singers. Their collaboration, which lasted over fifteen years, includes several concert series and recordings.

On Friday, January 24, 2025, Minja will take the stage at [Kulttuuritalo Wiljami](https://rimpparemmi.fi/esityskalenteri/kulttuuritalo-wiljami/) alongside her trusted musicians Miikka Ahlman, Aleksi Kaufmann, Jussi-Pekka Parviainen, and Simo Saukkola. The concert will feature songs from every M album.

Every year, the twins prepare to celebrate the birthday of someone who is no longer with them. Lost in their own thoughts, lonely, childless, and unwanted, on the margins of the world, they share their defeat. Despite sinking into dark thoughts, they remain optimistic and still await a small spark that will briefly illuminate their fragile happiness in the darkness.

This tragedy of physical comedy is part of a trilogy by the contemporary Martinican playwright Alfred Alexandre, which deals with the absent person.

On stage, we see Kallo and Rinta-Opas, aka Kylmä and Kalma, who were born in 2000 in Q-teatteri’s Lumottu Saari.

The primary language of the performance is physical theater, but in the mix of clowning and tragedy, other languages—such as French and English, in addition to Finnish—may make an appearance.

The performance will have its world premiere in Rovaniemi at Kulttuuritalo Wiljami as part of Rimpparemmi’s touring program. The first French-language version was presented at the Les Tréteaux du Maroni festival in French Guiana in April 2024.

Joka vuosi kaksoset valmistautuvat juhlimaan erään poissaolevan syntymäpäivää. Juuttuneina omiin mietiskelyihinsä, yksinäisinä, lapsettomina ja tarpeettomina, maailman syrjällä he jakavat tappionsa. Huolimatta synkkiin ajatuksiin vaipumisista he pysyvät optimisteina ja odottavat yhä pientä kipinää, joka valaisee hetkeksi hauraan onnen pimeydessä.

Tämä fyysisen komedian tragedia on osa martiniquelaisen nykynäytelmäkirjailijan Alfred Alexandren trilogiaa, joka käsittelee poissaolevaa henkilöä.

Näyttämöllä nähdään Kallo ja Rinta-Opas aka Kylmä ja Kalma, jotka syntyivät vuonna 2000 Q-teatterin Lumotussa Saaressa.

Esityksen pääkieli on fyysinen teatteri, mutta klovnerian ja tragedian summanmutikassa saattaa vilahtaa eri kieliä esimerkiksi ranskaa ja englantia suomen lisäksi.

## Remmi Live Club – Adele Sauros Quartet

On April 12, Remmi Live Club once again invites jazz lovers as the [Adele Sauros](http://adelesauros.com/) Quartet takes the stage at Kulttuuritalo Wiljami.

Combining Nordic and American jazz styles, the Adele Sauros Quartet was founded in 2012 and has released the albums Adele Sauros: I Paint You (Fresh Sound Records 2021), Adele Sauros: My Spontaneous Mind (2016), and Adele Sauros Quartet: It’s Who I Am (2014). The group has performed at Finland’s most prominent jazz festivals as well as throughout the Nordic region. The ensemble recently represented Finland at the Nordic Jazz Comets event at the Montmartre Jazz Club in Copenhagen in 2022 and, in connection with the event, undertook a tour of Sweden organized by the Finnish Jazz Federation.

The fourth album consists of Sauros’s compositions, which explore themes of recovery and finding hope. The melodic and contemplative compositions draw inspiration from the traditions of Nordic and American jazz. Sauros believes that music can change the world if you make art on your own terms, just like the Adele Sauros Quartet. The band members are virtuoso jazz musicians with open minds and the courage to step outside familiar patterns and throw themselves into spontaneous improvisation.

We are living in a time when the melodies of the past come to life and blend with the emotions and perspectives of today. This awakens in us a deep desire to better understand life. The Piaf Event takes you on a journey through different eras and spaces with the power of music and movement, creating a visual and emotional fresco that beats to the rhythm of Piaf’s heart.

Dance Theater Rimpparemmi’s 50th-anniversary masterpiece is director-choreographer Ari Numminen’s music-filled work “Tapahtuma Piaf.” Tapahtuma Piaf is a performance inspired by the life and songs of singer Edith Piaf. It is a combination of a concert and a dance theater performance. In “Tapahtuma Piaf,” history resonates with the echoes of great global changes and somber tones. But amidst it all, a voice and love ring out—the difficulty of living, loving, and existing, reaching toward the light. Non je regrette.

All these fundamental themes of life, everything she lived through, are heard in Edith Piaf’s voice and music. In addition to offering the chance to discover recognizable moments, events, and people from Piaf’s life, the performance also reflects on today’s themes of humanity, relationships, and meaning. Powerful visual images wash over you and get under your skin. How does one live life in its entirety? How does one laugh when one wants to cry?

The performance is carried by a fully orchestrated musical score, without forgetting Piaf’s original works, and of course dance, drawing inspiration from both Vaudeville numbers and powerful physical expression and dance theater.

The event Piaf is a journey that begins in France and ends in the heart of Edith Piaf via a hellish detour.

At the end of January, on January 26, 2024, at 7 p.m., Remmi Liveklubi will open its doors to a night of jazz, as Italian-Danish jazz singer Alice Carreri captivates the audience as the soloist with the Olli Estola Quartet.

Their diverse repertoire takes listeners on a journey through jazz history, from the melodies of Billie Holiday, Cole Porter, and Kurt Weill to the modern songs of the Black Keys and Janelle Monáe. The evening offers a journey through time from the 1930s all the way to the 2000s.

Italian-Danish jazz singer Alice Carreri has been part of Copenhagen’s jazz scene for a long time. She has performed with Jacob Fischer, Hans Ulrik, Hugo Rasmussen, and Jacob Christoffersen, among others; worked as a soloist with the Tivoli Big Band in various productions; and composed stage music for various dance and theater performances. The Oulu-based quartet led by Olli Estola has accompanied Alice for ten years.

Tammikuun lopulla 26.1.2024 klo 19 avaa ovensa Remmi Liveklubi, jossa kuullaan jazzia, kun italialais-tanskalainen jazzlaulaja Alice Carreri lumoaa yleisönsä Olli Estola Quartetin solistina.

What should we do and where should we go to make sure everyone’s bells ring just as merrily?

It’s a tough choice when one person wants to go to the theater, another to a concert, a third just wants to hit the bars, and a fourth wants to go to a restaurant. One person hopes for a nostalgic atmosphere, but also wants comedy and entertainment. What about the one who wants group games and activities, while their friends want karaoke?

Dance Theater Rimpparemmi meets the demand and has created—if not the world’s best, then at least the best pre-Christmas party of the upcoming holiday season—for all of us!

#### The outrageously good Christmas Show brings a lineup of music, dance, and the funniest acts to the stage at Kulttuuritalo Wiljami, combining school-style Christmas parties with the now-traditional Kinkkubingo. A pre-Christmas party that won’t disappoint anyone looking for a new kind of Christmas spirit or a traditional Christmas atmosphere.

At the heart of the Christmas show is the Christmas Show Band, featuring the musicians of Rimpparemmi, reinforced by guest musicians, with the easygoing and charismatic actor Joni Kuokkanen as the soloist. The Christmas Show Band treats the audience to Michael Bublé’s greatest Christmas hits, Jacques Brel’s timeless and passionate songs translated into Finnish, and, of course, traditional Christmas carols. The entire show is hosted by Rimpparemmi’s entertainment sisters Helmi Järvensivu and Laura Kallas, along with entertainer Atte Herd.

Pikkujoulut. Tuo kaikkien yhteisöjen odotetuin juhla on taas tuloillaan.

A production for the whole family, \*Akka ja luuta\* is a playful, open, and curious dance fairy tale created for children. The piece is based on a nursery rhyme by choreographer Joona Halonen, which he brings to life with imaginative contemporary dance. In the piece, the broom takes on many forms and is powered by water. Life and its small wonders are at the heart of the performance. A magnificent, storybook-like projection brings the performance to life and engages both young and older viewers alike.

This music-filled performance takes the audience on a journey through the decades. Accompanied by familiar songs, we get to travel from Mexico to the fells of Lapland, and from the past to the present. One moment we’re hopping on the back of a motorcycle, speeding wildly down the highway, while the next, our own two feet and the beautiful scenery are enough.

Rimpparemmi’s musicians and dancers serve as the guides of the performance, whose primary mission is to move the audience toward a happier state of mind and bring a boost of energy to the flow of everyday life. Rimpparemmi’s Music Box also takes its audience on a physical journey through the decades via participatory and body-invigorating exercises.

In travel, as in life, the destination isn’t the most important thing—it’s everything that happens along the way and the people we meet on our journey.

Musiikin täyteinen esitys vie katsojansa matkalle läpi vuosikymmenten. Tuttujen musiikkikappaleiden siivittämänä pääsemme matkustamaan esimerkiksi Meksikosta Lapin tuntureille sekä menneisyydestä nykyaikaan. Välillä hypätään moottoripyörän selkään viilettäen hurjasti pitkin maantietä, kun taas seuraavassa hetkessä omat jalat ja kaunis maisema riittävät.

MUSIC BOX – A Musical Journey Through Past Decades

Musaklubi’s guest in April is Rovaniemi-based composer and visual artist Johanna Ruotsalainen, whose new interdisciplinary work Depression Suite will receive its world premiere performed by Rimpparemmi. In recent years, Ruotsalainen has collaborated with prominent international contemporary musicians and contemporary music festivals, and it has been over a decade since the composer’s last Finnish premiere.

This four-part series, which combines contemporary music, animated projections, and dance, explores depression and anxiety disorders from an everyday, even humorous, perspective. By combining various elements of performance art, the work aims to make contemporary music more relatable to diverse audiences. In the piece, the human voice, accordion, double bass, and electronic music intertwine with dance, choreography, and animation to form one vast abyss of anxiety and senseless mental anguish.

A discussion on the artist’s malaise will be held in conjunction with the performance.

Ruotsalainen on tehnyt viime vuosina yhteistyötä merkittävien kansainvälisten nykymuusikoiden ja nykymusiikkifestivaalien kanssa, ja säveltäjän edellisestä Suomen kantaesityksestä on kulunut jo yli vuosikymmen.

Nykymusiikkia, animaatioprojisointeja ja tanssia yhdistävä neliosainen sarja tutkii masennusta ja ahdistuneisuushäiriötä arkisesta, jopa humoristisestakin näkökulmasta. Esitystaiteen eri elementtejä yhdistämällä teos haluaa lisätä nykymusiikin samaistuttavuutta erilaisille yleisöille. Teoksessa ihmisääni, harmonikka, kontrabasso ja elektroninen musiikki kietoutuvat tanssin, koreografian ja animaation kanssa yhdeksi suureksi ahdistuksen alhoksi ja mielettömäksi mentaalipainiksi.

Esityksen yhteydessä järjestetään keskustelu taiteilijan pahoinvoinnista.

Receptionists, an aesthetically refined and physically precise clown show that took Edinburgh by storm in the summer of 2022, is two clowns’ take on perfect customer service. Two receptionists who love their jobs await a flood of guests at the Five Stars Hotel. For these receptionists, the most important thing in their work is success and making a good impression—at any cost.

The hilarious Inga Björn and Kristiina Tammisalo draw on the comical and absurd aspects of customer service work. The show’s lively clowning and precise physicality leave no one cold and is suitable for all age groups.

Evergreens is a musical experience and cultural journey through past decades designed for residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities. The music box of memories opens, and accompanied by accordion, guitar, and vocals, these evergreens delight the audience! Pop hits and familiar songs from different decades get residents of nursing homes and assisted living facilities singing along and moved to tears. Between songs, residents can also participate in lighthearted activities set to the music, according to their own abilities.

Imagine an empty space. The possibilities and forms are endless.  As a dance piece, Stills offers a physical and interactive opportunity to explore empty space, infuse it with energy, and transform it.

Stills is an abstract contemporary dance piece for three dancers. Its starting point is spatial composition and the desire to create at least one visually pleasing arrangement. The choreographer’s task is to consider the space and its rhythm, structure, and energy, with the goal of arranging the performers into an image pleasing to the choreographer’s eye. The possibilities seem endless, and eventually the space itself begins to shape the events. The space is defined by powerful graphic lighting. The atmosphere, both subdued and explosive, is like a living, moving work of visual art. 

Rimpparemmi’s Jukka Nurmela is responsible for the work’s mystical and industrial soundscape. The lighting design is the work of the perceptive and insightful Jukka Laukkanen. The avant-garde costumes were created by Jaana Isokangas from Rovaniemi.

Asetelmia on abstrakti nykytanssiteos kolmelle tanssijalle. Sen lähtökohtana on tilallinen kompositio ja halu saada esille edes yksi silmää tyydyttävä asetelma. Koreografin tehtävänä on ajatella tilaa ja sen rytmiä, rakennetta ja energiaa, tavoitteena saada aseteltua esiintyjät koreografin silmää miellyttäväksi kuvaksi. Mahdollisuuksien määrä tuntuu loputtomalta ja lopulta tila itsessään alkaa muovaamaan tapahtumia. Tilaa rajaa voimakas graafinen valaistus. Hillitty ja samaan aikaan räjähtävä tunnelma on kuin elävä liikkeellinen kuvataideteos. 

Teoksen mystisestä ja industriaalisesta äänimaisemasta vastaa Rimpparemmin Jukka Nurmela. Valosuunnittelu on tarkkanäköisen ja oivaltavan Jukka Laukkasen käsialaa. Avant gardemaisen puvustuksen on luonut rovaniemeläinen Jaana Isokangas.

Dance Theater Rimpparemmi’s guest in November is Rovaniemi-born dance artist and filmmaker Kati Kallio. She will present dance films from both Finland and around the world on the Dance Stage. Alongside two of her own films, Kati has selected six short films that represent the diverse and rich genre of dance film. The film screening has been brought to Rovaniemi in collaboration with the renowned Dutch CinedansFest festival, for which Kati serves as touring curator.

The program opens with the film Kojamo, directed by Antti Ahokoivu. The film is a kinetic narrative about traveling against the current and the return journey upstream. The characters swimming against the current are portrayed by Jukka Tarvainen and Rovaniemi-born Taru Koski, both of whom also served as the film’s choreographers.

The second film is the dance film Eatnanvuloš Lottit – Birds Inside the Earth by Sámi artist Marja Helander. The film explores the deepest questions underlying ownership in Sámi territories. The film was awarded the prestigious Risto Jarva Prize at the Tampere Film Festival in 2018.

Directed and choreographed by Kati Kallio, the film Käy Rinnallain was created based on interviews with Kyllikki Piiranha and an idea by Elli Isokoski. The film aims to highlight the perspective of Kyllikki, who lived to be 94, on loneliness. The film explores themes of letting go and loneliness by telling the story of a long-standing friendship and partnership.

“Sweetheart, walk properly,” Maralli’s parents tell her as they take her to a party. But what does it mean to behave “properly”? As the evening progresses, the adults’ behavior remains strange to her. And is she the only one who notices the strange shadow? Directed and choreographed by Swedish filmmaker Jerry Carlsson, the short film Shadow Animals succeeds in drawing the viewer into a bizarre series of events through the eyes of little Maralli. The film won the Grand Prize at the Cinedans Festival in 2021. The film is in Swedish with English subtitles.

INTERMISSION

The bubbly dance film Ha ha ha, directed by Samuli Valkama and choreographed by Jyrki Karttunen, tells the story of an efficient factory where workers mass-produce hollow laughter. One day, however, genuine, free laughter escapes supervision and spreads out into the world. The film stars the charming Heidi Naakka.

Following the intermission, the second film is the meditative short film \*Time Subjectives in Objective Time\*, directed by Kati Kallio and woven across different time layers. Produced in collaboration with the Yekaterinburg-based ZONK’A group, this dance film has toured extensively internationally; it was selected for the Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival 2021 and won the Production Prize at the CINEMATECA Festival 2020 in Italy.

The work Fibonacci by Czech artists Tomáš Hubáček and Marie Gourdain is like an “environmental dance film” or an audiovisual meditation. The film’s structure and content draw inspiration from the famous Fibonacci sequence, which is also associated with the “golden ratio.” In creating this visually stunning film, the filmmakers have sought to incorporate these two concepts into every aspect of the work.

Dear Tree, Please Don’t Spill on Our Grave briefly tells the story of human history. The film begins with a somewhat dry attempt to figure out the “How did we end up here?” situation, which only leads to further questions like “What is that?” and “Why does Anna live in the bathroom?” This ingenious and bold film is highly interesting and fresh in both form and narrative. It tells the story of the adventurous Anna, who accidentally manages to throw herself into a surprise party. The film is Dutch dance artist Jonne Covers’ master’s thesis from the Gothenburg School of Contemporary Performative Arts in 2021. The film features English dialogue and subtitles.

## Kati Kallio

Kati Kallio, who holds a Master’s degree in Dance, is a filmmaker and Finland’s leading expert on dance film, having worked extensively in the field of dance throughout her career. Since 2008, her artistic work has focused on dance film. She has produced 18 short films, which have been screened at numerous international festivals and on television. As an expert, she receives several international invitations each year to serve as a curator, jury member, and workshop leader. While working with the dance group Myrskyryhmä, Kallio has been developing methods for participatory dance film since 2010. Myrskyryhmä has produced eight short films in collaboration with older adults.

Kallio is a promoter and pioneer of Finnish dance film who worked at Loikka Kontakti ry to improve the status of domestic dance film from 2008 to 2018. From 2008 to 2014, Kallio was responsible for audience development in dance film and developed, among other things, workshop concepts for educational work with children and young people. His term as artistic director was from 2015 to 2018.

“For me, dance film is an art form that combines dance and cinematic storytelling and is as broad and diverse as film or dance art. It is not bound by form or genre boundaries. It is a fusion of powerful art forms and a genre in its own right that is constantly evolving.

The expression of dance film originates from the body, movement, and action. At its core lies the combination of ‘thinking’ that emanates from the body and the moving image. A functioning body does not operate through concepts; rather, it senses, feels, acts, and is in immediate contact with another. The body’s ‘language’ is revealing, conveying emotions and emotional states. I am interested in utilizing bodily and non-verbal expression in film. Or, to put it another way, I want to utilize cinematic expression in dance. Dance brings to film narrative a multifaceted form of expression deeply rooted in emotion that transcends language barriers. A dance performance is the art of the moment. It is performed, and after that, it no longer exists in the same form. The camera captures the moment, and the film-based work remains in a tangible form. Film is a widely recognized art form, and its potential for global distribution provides a platform for being seen. One can return to a film relatively effortlessly.

I want to evoke kinetic sensations in the viewer, stir emotions, and get people interested in non-verbal communication. I am a storyteller driven by the need to make things and phenomena visible and to convey a message. The subjects of my films arise from human and everyday themes, such as breaking free from addiction or overcoming personal challenges. Toisena elokuvana nähdään saamelaistaiteilija Marja Helanderin tanssielokuva *Eatnanvuloš Lottit – Maan sisällä linnut.* Elokuva tutkii saamelaisalueiden omistajuuden takana piileviä syvimpiä kysymyksiä. Elokuva palkittiin arvostetulla Risto Jarva -palkinnolla Tampereen elokuvajuhlilla vuonna 2018.

Kati Kallion ohjaama ja koreografioima elokuva *Käy Rinnallain* on syntynyt Kyllikki Piiranhaastattelujen ja Elli Isokosken idean pohjalle. Elokuvalla halutaan tuoda esiin 94-vuotiaaksi eläneen Kyllikin näkökulmaa yksinäisyydestä. Elokuva nostaa esiin luopumisen ja yksinäisyyden teemat kertomalla pitkästä ystävyydestä ja kumppanuudesta.

”Kultaseni, kävele kunnolla”, sanoo Marallin vanhemmat hänelle, kun he vievät hänet juhliin. Mutta mitä tarkoittaa käyttäytyä ”kunnolla”? Illan edetessä aikuisten käyttäytyminen on hänelle yhä outoa. Ja onko hän ainoa, joka huomaa oudon varjon? Ruotsalaisen Jerry Carlssonin ohjaama ja koreografioima lyhytelokuva *Shadow Animals* onnistuu kietomaan katsojan omituisen tapahtumasarjan keskelle pienen Marallin näkökulmasta. Elokuva voitti Cinedans Festivaalilla pääpalkinnon vuonna 2021. Elokuva on ruotsinkielinen, englannin tekstityksellä.

TAUKO

Samuli Valkaman ohjaama ja Jyrki Karttusen koreografioima pirskahteleva tanssielokuva *Ha ha ha* kertoo tehokkaasta tehtaasta, jossa työntekijät purkittavat massatuotantona kolkkoa naurua. Eräänä päivänä oikea, vapaa nauru kuitenkin karkaa valvonnan ohi maailmalle. Elokuvan pääroolissa nähdään hurmaava Heidi Naakka.

Tauon jälkeen toisena nähdään Kati Kallion ohjaama, meditatiivinen, eri aika kerroksiin nivottu lyhytelokuva *Time Subjectives in Objective Time*. Yhtistyössä Jekaterinburgilaisen ZONK’A ryhmän kanssa toteutettu tanssielokuva on kiertänyt laajasti kansainvälisesti, elokuva on mm. valittu Clermont-Ferrand lyhytelokuva festivaalille 21 ja saanut Production Prize palkinnon CINEMATECA festivaalilla 2020 Italiassa.

Tsekkiläisten Tomáš Hubáčekin ja Marie Gourdainin teos *Fibonacci* on kuin ‘ympäristötanssielokuva’ tai audiovisuaalinen meditaatio. Elokuvan rakenne ja sisältö ottaa inspiraationsa kuuluisasta Fibonacci-numerosarjasta, joka liitetään myös ‘kultaiseen leikkaukseen’. Visuaalisesti silmää hivelevän elokuvan teossa on pyritty ottamaan nämä kaksi käsitettä mukaan jokaisessa sen osa-alueessa.

*Dear Tree, Please Don’t Spill on Our Grave*, kertoo lyhyesti tarinaa ihmiskunnan historiasta. Elokuva alkaa hieman kuivahkosta yrityksestä selvittää “Miten päädyimme tähän?” -tilanteesta, joka johtaa vain lisäkysymyksiin “Mikä tuo on? ja “Miksi Anna asuu vessassa?”. Nerokas ja rohkea elokuva on muodoltaan ja kerronnaltaan erittäin kiinnostava ja raikas. Se kertoo seikkailunhaluisesta Annasta, joka pystyy vahingossa heittää itsensä yllätysjuhliin. Elokuva on hollantilaisen tanssitaiteilija Jonne Coversin maisteriopintojen päättötyö *Göteborgin Contemporary Performative Arts*koulusta 2021. Elokuvassa on englanninkielinen puhe ja tekstitys.

### Kati Kallio

Tanssitaiteen maisteri Kati Kallio on elokuvantekijä ja Suomen johtava tanssielokuvan asiantuntija, joka on urallaan toiminut laaja-alaisesti tanssitaiteen parissa. Hänen taiteellinen työ on vuodesta 2008 lähtien keskittynyt tanssielokuvaan. Hän on valmistanut 18 lyhytelokuvaa, joita on esitetty useilla kansainvälisillä festivaaleilla ja televisioissa. Asiantuntijana hän vastaanottaa vuosittain useita kansainvälisiä kutsuja kuratoijana, tuomariston jäsenenä ja työpajojen ohjaajana. Kallio on tanssiryhmä Myrskyryhmässä työskennellessään kehittänyt osallistavan tanssielokuvan metodeja vuodesta 2010 lähtien. Myrskyryhmän tuotantona on valmistunut kahdeksan lyhytelokuvaa yhteistyössä ikäihmisen kanssa.

Kallio on suomalaisen tanssielokuvan edistäjä ja pioneeri, joka on työskennellyt Loikka Kontakti ry:ssä kotimaisen tanssielokuvan aseman parantamiseksi vuosina 2008-2018. Vuosina 2008-2014 Kallio vastasi tanssielokuvan yleisötyöstä ja kehitti muun muassa työpajakonsepteja lasten ja nuorten parissa tehtävään kasvatustyöhön. Hänen taiteellinen johtajuus kautensa oli 2015-2018.

*” Minulle tanssielokuva on taidemuoto, joka yhdistää tanssia ja elokuvakerrontaa ja on yhtä laaja ja monimuotoinen kuin elokuva- tai tanssitaide. Sitä ei sido muoto tai genrerajat. Se on vahvojen taidemuotojen fuusio ja oma kehittyvä lajinsa.*

*Tanssielokuvan ilmaisu lähtee kehosta, liikkeestä ja toiminnosta. Keskiöön nousee kehosta lähtevä ‘ajattelu’ ja liikkuvan kuvan yhdistäminen. Toimiva keho ei käsitteistä, vaan se aistii, tuntee, toimii ja on välittömässä kontaktissa toiseen. Kehon ‘kieli’ on paljastava, tunteita ja tunnetiloja välittävä. Olen kiinnostunut kehollisen ja sanattoman ilmaisun hyödyntämisestä elokuvassa. Tai toisin päin ilmaistuna, haluan hyödyntää elokuvallista ilmaisua tanssitaiteessa. Tanssi tuo elokuvakerrontaan moninaisen ja tunteisiin vahvasti sitoutuneen ilmaisun, joka läpäisee kielimuurit. Tanssiesitys on hetken taidetta. Se esitetään ja sen jälkeen sitä ei enää samanlaisena ole olemassa. Kamera tallentaa hetken ja elokuva muotoinen teos jää konkreettisesti olemaan. Elokuva on laajasti tunnettu taidemuoto ja sen mahdollisuudet levitä maailmanlaajuisesti tarjoaa alustan nähdyksi tulemiselle. Elokuvan äärelle voi palata kohtuullisen vaivattomasti uudestaan.*

Rimpparemmi’s house musicians, Henri Haakana on accordion and Jukka Nurmela on bass, have gathered the cream of Rovaniemi’s pop musicians around them; in addition to them and Raappana, pianist Eero Aakala and guitarist Mikko Nuorala perform Christmas songs. Adding their own gingerbread-scented touch to the band are Rimpparemmi’s dancers Helmi Järvensivu and Laura Kallas, also known as the Twisted Sisters.

This Christmas, the Christmas show band’s repertoire features Michael Bublé’s biggest Christmas hits, Jacques Brel’s timeless and passionate songs translated into Finnish, and of course those traditional “most beautiful” Christmas carols, which will be sung as a group sing-along in karaoke style.

## Toward Orlando

Virginia Woolf’s novel Orlando tells the story of a person who lives for 400 years without aging, sometimes as a man and sometimes as a woman. Dancer Ari Numminen and musician Tuomas Luukkonen’s work Toward Orlando is inspired by the story, but does not follow it. It seeks to perceive the invisible doors of time, to sketch its infinite contours, and to step through them. It is an unfinished journey along the boundaries of masculinity and femininity, an incomplete physical retreat and musical meditation that reaches toward the comforting possibilities of rebirth. Kohti Orlandoa is a tiger cub’s journey to a Renaissance queen.

## Vallankumousetydit

Vallankumousetydit is part of Ari Numminen’s dance trilogy, an anthology of themes and subjects from throughout the dancer-choreographer’s career.

“The most revolutionary thing for me personally was to start dancing again after nearly twenty years. A revolution always represents change—and in this case, specifically a change in perceptions of what one can and is allowed to do with an aging body. This is my revolution against the ossified notions of the worship of youth and efficiency. The movement continues, and it will be carried through to the end.”

Vallankumousetydit explores revolution as a state of mind that smolders, rises, ignites, and spreads, surging over the edges and blazing from a personal, inner compulsion and fire.

Revolution is movement, a dance despite everything. A journey coming to an end and a new beginning, restless feet. It walks in the old father’s suit, but finds its own paths. Revolution is a victory over the oppressors, the bullies, and the fascists. It is laborious and heavy, yet holds a dream of freedom and lightness. Revolution is life that continues, having fundamentally transformed its form.

Vallankumousetydit is a dialogue between the musician, the dancer, and ideals. It is a fresco of humanity, humanism, and peace.

“The starting point for this part of the trilogy sprang from the ideological soil of my home village. I was politically active as a young person, but after discovering dance, my passion for ideology turned into a passion for art. In the 1990s, I found myself in folk music and dance circles, and Tanssiteatteri Tsuumi, in particular, has had a significant influence on my work. At Tsuumi, I met folk musician Hannu Kella, the rightful composer and musician of Vallankumousetydit.

The old labor movement songs I learned from older men as a young boy had stuck in my memory. Kella saw it as important to preserve and document this singing tradition, and so we founded Duo Ari Numminen & Hannu Kella, which has been performing steadily for twenty years now. In recent years, our collaboration has thus focused particularly on old labor songs, of which we have also released two albums. Now our collaboration is taking on a new form. The theme of revolution remains—now detached from political frameworks.” – Ari Numminen

The work explores revolution as a state of mind, like an ecstatic dance swirling in a sea of flags, which nevertheless falls from a great height onto a hard surface with a loud thud.



## Ari Numminen

Ari Numminen is a veteran dance artist who began his career at Dance Theater Raatikko and the Helsinki City Theater dance troupe back in the 1980s, later becoming an independent artist and choreographer.

Numminen is known for his numerous original works at various Finnish dance theaters (Tanssiteatteri Tsuumi, Aurinkobaletti, M/D, Tanssiteatteri Rimpparemmi). Numminen has also created choreographies for theaters, opera (National Theater, National Opera, Helsinki City Theater, Rovaniemi City Theater, Turku City Theater), as well as for musicals and theatrical productions. Numminen’s most recent theater choreographies are Hamlet (National Theater) and The Sea of Viena (Kajaani City Theater).

Ari Numminen has also worked as an educator (Teak, Näty, Turku Academy of Arts, Tampere Conservatory, and Finnish Theater Academy).

After 20 years, Numminen has returned to performing and has created a duet trilogy: Kohti Orlandoa, Vallankumousetydit (premiere at Vanha Juko on May 13, 2022), and Prospero (premiere in 2022 at Täydenkuun Tanssit).

Virginia Woolfin romaani Orlando kertoo henkilöstä, joka elää 400 vuotta vanhenematta, välillä sukupuoleltaan miehenä ja välillä naisena. Tanssija Ari Nummisen ja muusikko Tuomas Luukkosen teos *Kohti Orlandoa* on inspiroitunut tarinasta, mutta ei noudata sitä. Se pyrkii havaitsemaan ajan näkymättömät ovet, piirtämään sen äärettömät ääriviivat ja astumaan lävitse. Se on viimeistelemätön vaellus maskuliinisuuden ja feminiinisyyden rajapinnoilla, keskeneräinen kehollinen retriitti ja musiikillinen meditaatio, joka kurkottaa uudestisyntymän lohdullisiin mahdollisuuksiin. #### Vallankumousetydit

Vallankumousetydit on osa Ari Nummisen tanssitrilogiaa, joka on kokoomateos teemoista ja aiheista tanssija-koreografin uran varrelta.

*“Vallankumouksellisinta minulle itselleni, oli aloittaa tanssiminen uudestaan lähes kahdenkymmenen vuoden jälkeen. Vallankumous edustaa aina muutosta – ja tässä tapauksessa erityisesti muutosta käsityksiin siitä, mitä voi ja saa tehdä vanhalla keholla. Tämä on minun vallankumoukseni nuoruuden ja tehokkuuden palvomisen luutuneita käsityksiä vastaan. Liike jatkuu, ja se viedään loppuun asti.”*

Vallankumousetydit tutkii vallankumousta mielentilana, joka kytee, nousee, syttyy ja leviää, kuohuu yli äyräiden ja roihuaa henkilökohtaisesta, sisäisestä pakosta ja palosta.

Vallankumous on liikettä, tanssia kaikesta huolimatta. Päättyvä matka ja uuden alku, levottomat jalat. Se kulkee vanhan isän puvussa, mutta löytää omat polkunsa. Vallankumous on voitto latistajista, kiusaajista ja fasisteista. Se on työläs ja raskas, mutta sisältää unelman vapaudesta ja keveydestä. Vallankumous on elämää, joka jatkuu oleellisesti muotonsa muuttaneena.

Vallankumousetydit on vuoropuhelua soittajan, tanssijan ja ihanteiden välillä. Se on ihmisyyden, humanismin ja rauhan fresco.

*“Lähtökohta trilogian tälle osalle kumpusi kotikyläni aatteellisesta maaperästä. Olin nuorena poliittisesti aktiivi, mutta löydettyäni tanssin, aatteen palo vaihtui taiteen paloon. 1990-luvulla löysin itseni kansanmusiikki ja -tanssipiireistä, ja erityisesti Tanssiteatteri Tsuumilla on ollut merkittävä vaikutus työhöni. Tsuumissa tutustuin kansanmuusikko Hannu Kellaan, itseoikeutettuun Vallankumousetydien säveltäjään ja muusikkoon.*

*Pikkupoikana vanhoilta miehiltä oppimani vanhan työväenliikkeen laulut olivat painuneet muistiini. Kella näki tärkeänä ylläpitää ja tallentaa tätä lauluperinnettä, ja niin perustimme Duo Ari Numminen & Hannu Kellan, joka on keikkaillut tasaiseen tahtiin jo kahdenkymmenen vuoden ajan. Viime vuosina yhteistyömme on siis keskittynyt erityisesti vanhojen työväenlaulujen ympärille, joista olemme tehneet myös kaksi levyä. Nyt yhteistyömme saa uudenlaisen muodon. Teos pohtii vallankumousta mielentilana, joka on kuin lippumeressä kuohuva hurmioitunut tanssi, joka kuitenkin putoaa korkealta kovalle alustalle ison kumahduksen myötä.



#### Ari Numminen

Ari Numminen on pitkän linjan tanssitaiteilija, joka aloitti uransa tanssiteatteri Raatikossa ja Helsingin kaupunginteatterin tanssiryhmässä jo 80-luvulla, siirtyen myöhemmin itsenäiseksi taiteentekijäksi ja koreografiksi.

Numminen tunnetaan lukuisista omista teoksistaan suomalaisissa eri tanssiteattereissa (Tanssiteatteri Tsuumi, Aurinkobaletti, M/D, Tanssiteatteri Rimpparemmi). Numminen on tehnyt myös koreografioita teattereihin, oopperaan (Kansallisteatteri, Kansallisooppera, Helsingin kaupunginteatteri, Rovaniemen kaupunginteatteri, Turun kaupunginteatteri) niin musikaaleihin kuin teatteriesityksiin. Nummisen viimeisimmät teatterikoreografiat ovat *Hamlet*(Kansallisteatteri) ja *Vienan meri* (Kajaanin kaupunginteatteri).

Ari Numminen on toiminut myös pedagogina (Teak, Näty, Turun taideakatemia, Tampereen konservatorio ja Suomen teatteriopisto).

20 vuoden jälkeen, Numminen on jälleen palannut esiintyväksi taiteilijaksi ja valmistanut duotrilogian *Kohti Orlandoa, Vallankumousetydit* (ensi-ilta Vanha Juko 13.5.2022) sekä *Prospero* (ensi-ilta 2022 Täydenkuun Tanssit).

Absurdity and the absurdity of the situation are at the heart of this three-act tragedy. The movement language combines dance and physical theater. This three-act tragedy is brought to life by Rimpparemmi dancers Herd and Järvensivu, along with musician Nurmela.

Milla Virtanen is an artist from Oulu who graduated as a dancer from the Fontys Dance Academy in the Netherlands. Since completing her studies, she has worked as a freelance dancer and performer in the Netherlands and Finland. Since 2007, Virtanen has created 15 dance theater works, and her art has been presented in 12 countries. Her primary artistic medium is dance. Alongside dance, she also makes versatile use of other tools such as visual art and physical theater.

The compulsive need to scrutinize, the feeling of being an outsider, and people’s hunger for achievement are among the themes Virtanen has explored in her works. The themes she chooses for her works are ones she recognizes within herself. Virtanen is interested in irrationality, due to its simultaneous allure and confusion. He describes the creative process as both a wonderful and terrifying leap into the unknown: “In the creative process, the landing can be either smooth, or it can slam hard right in your face. It’s always worth taking the leap, even in a broken high heel.”

Absurdius ja tilanteen älyttömyys ovat keskiössä Kolmen näytöksen tragediassa. Liikekieli muodostuu tanssista ja fyysisestä teatterista. Kolmen näytöksen tragedian kehollistavat Rimpparemmin tanssijat Herd ja Järvensivu sekä muusikko Nurmela.

Milla Virtanen on oululainen taiteilija, joka on valmistunut tanssijaksi Fontys tanssiakatemiasta Hollannista. Opiskelun jälkeen hän on työskennellyt freelancetanssijana ja -esiintyjänä Hollannissa ja Suomessa. Vuodesta 2007 lähtien Virtanen on luonut 15 tanssiteatteriteosta ja hänen taidettaan on ollut esillä 12 maassa. Hänen taiteellinen pääinstrumenttinsa on tanssi. Tanssin rinnalla hän käyttää monipuolisesti myös muita työkaluja kuten visuaalista taidetta ja fyysistä teatteria.

Pakonomainen tarkastamisen tarve, ulkopuolisuuden tunne sekä ihmisten tavoitteellisuuden nälkä ovat mm. aiheita, joita Virtanen on käsitellyt teoksissaan. Hänen teoksilleen valitsemat teemat ovat sellaisia, joita hän tunnistaa itsessään. Virtanen on kiinnostunut irrationaalisuudesta, sen yhtäaikaisen viehätyksen ja hämmennyksen vuoksi. Absurdity and the absurdity of the situation are at the heart of this three-act tragedy. The movement language combines dance and physical theater.

Absurdius ja tilanteen älyttömyys ovat keskiössä Kolmen näytöksen tragediassa. Liikekieli muodostuu tanssista ja fyysisestä teatterista.

Under the direction of Taina Mäki-Iso, a master of physical theater and clowning, Rimpparemmi’s own comedy consultants, Hermann and Mina, demonstrate how to properly implement the official laughter guidelines. They take a serious look at repetition and rhythm, as well as the more delicate aspects of human absurdity. When something is truly real, even despair can appear comical. What exactly makes us laugh when someone stumbles or gets hurt? And how is it that others find it funny when we ourselves are completely serious?

The performance also takes a perspective that is either ridiculous or terribly serious, given the fact that Mäki-Iso is a genuine oddball among Rimpparemmi’s older members. So it’s possible that this whole thing will turn into a complete farce.

The music in the performance draws inspiration from Balkan and klezmer music. The lyrics of the songs heard in the performance are in the clowns’ imaginary language.

Taina Mäki-Iso (B.A.) is a director and teacher specializing in physical theater and clowning who works extensively with professionals, students, and amateurs in theater, dance, circus, and music. Mäki-Iso also performs as a clown and has created several solo performances, appearing at numerous festivals both in Finland and abroad, including in Spain, the Czech Republic, and the United Arab Emirates. She also works as a hospital clown.

Mäki-Iso has directed productions for both municipal theaters and independent groups. His most recent directing projects include Mäki-Iso & Working Group: Love?! IIK! KÄÄK! YÄK! (2020, the production was part of the main program of the Tampere Theater Summer 2021), Teatteri Eurooppa Neljä’s clown show Hannu ja Kerttu -vai meneekö kaikki ihan pipariksi? (2020), and Muteco (2019), a production combining clowning and contemporary dance for dancers Mari Kortelainen and Kalle Pulkkinen.

Mäki-Iso is a highly regarded teacher and has taught clowning and facial expression at institutions such as the University of the Arts Helsinki’s Theater Academy, Näty, the Turku Academy of Arts, and the Lahti Circus School. She herself has studied clowning and comedy under teachers such as Philippe Gaulier, Giovanni Fusetti, Pierre Byland, Norman Taylor, Angela de Castro, and Ami Hattab.

Mäki-Iso is currently writing about clowning, and in this Rimpparemmi production, she essentially reflects on what she has written.

Fyysisen teatterin ja klovnerian taiturin Taina Mäki-Ison ohjauksessa Rimpparemmin omat komiikkakonsultit Hermann ja Mina esittelevät, kuinka viralliset naurudirektiivit toteutetaan asianmukaisella tavalla. He tarkastelevat ihan tosissaan niin toiston ja rytmin kuin myös ihmisen naurettavuuden herkkiäkin ulottuvuuksia. Kun on oikein totta niin epätoivokin voi näyttäytyä koomisena. Mikä meitä oikein naurattaa kompastelussa tai kun jotakuta sattuu? Ja miten niin toisia naurattaa, kun itse on oikein tosissaan?

Naurettavaa tai sitten ihan kauhean totista näkökulmaa esityksen tuo myös se tosiasia, että Mäki-Iso on aitona ämpäripäänä Rimpparemmin muinaisia jäseniä. On siis mahdollista, että tämä koko homma menee ihan tanhupelleilyksi.

Esityksen musiikki on saanut inspiraationsa balkan- ja klezmer-musiikista. Esityksessä kuultujen laulujen sanat ovat klovnien mielikuvituskieltä.

Taina Mäki-Iso (FM)on fyysiseen teatteriin ja klovneriaan erikoistunut ohjaaja ja opettaja, joka työskentelee laajalti teatterin, tanssin, sirkuksen ja musiikin ammattilaisten, opiskelijoiden ja harrastajien kanssa. Mäki-Iso esiintyy myös klovnina ja hän on tehnyt useita sooloesityksiä esiintyen useilla festivaaleilla kotimaan lisäksi myös esimerkiksi Espanjassa, Tšekissä ja Arabiemiraatissa. Hän työskentelee myös sairaalaklovnina.

Mäki-Iso on tehnyt ohjauksia sekä eri kaupunginteattereihin että vapaille ryhmille. Hänen viimeisimmät ohjaustyönsä ovat Vaasan kaupunginteatteriin Mäki-Iso&työryhmä:Rakkaus?!IIK!KÄÄK!YÄK! (2020, esitys oli Tampereen teatterikesän pääohjelmistossa 2021), Teatteri Eurooppa Neljän klovneriaesitys *Hannu ja Kerttu -vai meneekö kaikki ihan pipariksi?* (2020) ja klovneriaa ja nykytanssia yhdistävä *Muteco* (2019) tanssijoille Mari Kortelainen ja Kalle Pulkkinen.

Mäki-Iso on arvostettu opettaja ja hän on opettanut mm. klovneriaa ja naamioilmaisua esimerkiksi Taideyliopiston Teatterikorkeakoulussa, Nätyllä, Turun taideakatemiassa ja Lahden sirkuskoulutuksessa. Fades Away is a water-based visual and physical stage production that reflects the connection between an individual’s choices and actions and the ecological state of the world. Flowing in rhythm with the viewer’s inner world, the piece touches the audience with its powerful presence and human touch, while reminding us of the transience of all things.

Fades Away plays with magical visual imagery and everyday realism, where the illusion of theater is repeatedly shattered and rebuilt. MimoArt Company’s unique interdisciplinary approach defies conventional genre classifications. The work skillfully combines contemporary dance, butoh, physical mime and theater, and clowning. The piece’s distinctive movement language, together with its striking visuals and soundscape, creates an insightful, multi-layered, and deeply moving experience for the audience.

Fades Away is the second part of MimoArt Company’s three-part WATER TRILOGY series. The production is led by an international, interdisciplinary team. A co-production by MimoArt Company, Dance Theater Minimi, and Dance Theater Rimpparemmi, the work will premiere at the Kuopio City Theater on October 1, 2021, and will run in Kuopio from November 2 October–November 12, 2021, in Kuopio and October 8–November 20, 2021, in Rovaniemi.

The performance is wordless. Running time: 1.5 hours, no intermission.

Katsojan sielunmaailman kanssa samassa rytmissä virtaava teos koskettaa vahvalla läsnäololla ja inhimillisellä otteella, muistuttaen samalla kaiken katoavaisuudesta.

Fades away leikittelee maagisten visuaalisten lavakuvien ja arkirealistisen komiikan välillä, jossa teatterin illuusio rikotaan ja rakennetaan kerta toisensa jälkeen uudelleen. MimoArt Companyn omalakinen poikkitaiteellinen ajattelu kaihtaa totuttuja genremäärittelyjä. Teos yhdistää taitavasti nykytanssia, butoa, fyysistä miimiä ja -teatteria sekä klovneriaa. Teoksen omintakeinen liikekieli yhdessä vaikuttavan visuaalisuuden ja äänimaailman kanssa rakentavat katsojien eteen oivaltavan, monitasoisen ja kokonaisvaltaisesti koskettavan elämyksen.

Fades Away on MimoArt Companyn kolmiosaisen WATER TRILOGY -teossarjan toinen osa. Teoksen toteutuksesta vastaa kansainvälinen, poikkitaiteellinen työryhmä. MimoArt Companyn, Tanssiteatteri Minimin ja Tanssiteatteri Rimpparemmin yhteistuotantona toteutettava teos saa ensi-iltansa Kuopion kaupunginteatterissa 1.10.2021, jonka jälkeen se nähdään Kuopiossa 2.10.-12.11.2021  ja Rovaniemellä 8.10.-20.11.2021.
